In recent city restaurant inspections that led to shut downs, fruit fly
infestations were mentioned.

Why would this be? Is there something city inspectors know about fruit
flies that I don't? Some new disease vector?

Fruit fly infestation probably means... They bought a box of fruit that
with flies just about to hatch.

I hope restaurants don't spray for this. You cover all the produce and
the flies don't lay any eggs. The infestation lasts for hours. Sheesh.

If I heard the story correctly, it was a customer that called because of
the fruit flies. The inspectors found other things worthy of of closing
them.

Well, I'm glad they found mouse droppings. Still ridiculous that a
complaint of fruit flies would start an investigation.

You wanna be the person who signs off on such a report since it was
only fruit flies?

You wanna be that person when something more serious shows up at that
location that resolves in a person getting sick?

I don't think so,

I don't think so,
If an inspector is sent to a restaurant, I want him to inspect. I don't
want him making findings on a report irrelevant to protecting the public
health. Fruit flies are not a health hazard.

I want the Daley administration to stop misinforming the public.

They only indicate there's maggots on the vegetables and fruits. No big
deal. I keep my place full of flies.

Fruit flies are not a health hazard.
can they be indicative of improper food storage techniques?

I mean I go to a market and there's tons of fruit there and I'm not
swatting flying insects. How come? Maybe because they keep doors shut in
storage areas, they pluck out damaged items and keep containers clean?

I can leave my fruit in the bowl on the counter for days. Take one
banana or a plum and open a wound up on it and within a few hours
there's shit flying all around the counter top.

yup. if my local produce store was overrun w/ fruit flies, I'd question
the fresh and wholesomeness of the place.

Fruit flies like rotty stuff the best.

no, i do not feed* my parrot parakeets.

kthx, acrtually i run a pretty tight ship birdfood-wise. Most of what he
eats is poepel food anyway,
except for his nutball$$$ and virdie vitamins.

Years ago i let that kind of thing get out of hand to my great annoyance and
lament. never again.
